I’m Brett Rodgers, massage therapist and health author.  Sure, I sit a lot.  I too have had buttock pain from sitting and it’s just no fun!  I wanted to know, “What are the causes and treatments?”  So many people have buttock pain…from pregnancy, from running, walking, and from stress too.  What you need is to learn the causes and treatment for buttock pain so that you can address it properly.  Here are 4 things to do to reduce your buttock pain when sitting, from sciatica (sciatic pain), during pregnancy, from running, walking or other activities.

1.  Create a place where you stand at your computer instead of sitting.  This takes effort but it is the logical way to get off of your buttocks and onto your feet.  Years ago my dad, an accountant, built a second very tall desk in his office so that he could stand right up to it part of the time to give his aching ass a break from sitting.  This is a major way to relieve buttock pain from sitting.

It is also very beneficial to sit right on the floor at a very short desk, (table) like they do in India.  When you sit on the floor with your legs in different positions it stretches muscles (yoga) that need to be stretched.  Some of you may think I’m crazy to suggest this because maybe you work in an atmospere where standing at a desk or sitting on the floor is not appropriate.  I am not writing this article to figure out everything for you!  I’m here to tell you the truth about fixing your back pain from sitting, pregnancy, running, walking or other activity.  Use your freaking head to heal your body!  You need to make the effort to change your posture, sitting positions, bad habits and body support mechanisms to create wellness.  My articles can’t force people to eat healthy organic food either!

2.  Roll around on a tennis ball!  When you’ve been sitting for a long time, especially if your pregnant or have been running or walking, your buttocks get tight and painful because the by-product of using them, lactic acid, gets built up in your buttock muscles and makes them sore.  This can create pressure on your sciatic nerve and pain!  Spend 10-15 minutes per side rolling around on a tennis ball on the floor to release tension in your gluteals and relieve buttock pain when sitting, and from sciatic pain.  Also, buy a Theracane.  A Theracane is an incredible tool that you can purchase on the internet that enables you to work on your own back, buttocks, and shoulders.  I use my Theracane every day!  Best $30 I ever spent!

3.  Get some professional massage therapy.  A professional massage therapist can really help you to feel better by working out the tension in and around your sore and painful buttocks.  If you’ve been running or walking definitely get your quads worked on.  If you’ve been sitting a lot, have them focus on the buttocks also called gluteals, the middle back and the quadriceps.  Releasing these muscles is key to a healthy low back and buttocks.  Also, buy a foam roller and roll on your quads (the muscles on the front of your thighs) and also on your I.T. band.  These muscles are directly connected to your buttock muscles and loosening them can give great relief to buttock pain from sciatica, when sitting, walking, running, or pregnancy.  You can find foam rollers at Walmart, massage supply stores or on the internet.

4.  After you feel better do some yoga.  Active stretching of your muscles can prevent further problems.  Be careful.  Do the other things first because you don’t want to stretch an injured tendon and damage it more.   Remember to buy a theracane and work on your back muscles.  I use mine every day!

Thanks very much for your time and I hope you feel better soon.  Brett Rodgers
